The Municipality of Bucharest has opened several infrastructure sites to avoid losing European funds, considering that the works must be completed on time. The projects target the heating network and the modernization of tram lines, which are approximately 60 years old.
The general mayor Ciprian Ciucu has asked builders to mobilize and extend the working hours to make up for the delays. The heating works, valued at over two billion lei, started in 2023 and must be completed by December 2027.
Regarding the trams, the financing contract was signed in December 2025, and out of the 50 kilometers of track, only 5.5 kilometers have been completed. The mayor emphasized the importance of completing the projects to avoid losing non-reimbursable funding, considering that the worn tracks affect tram circulation. The projects are divided into 16 lots, each with deadlines of 12 or 24 months, and the mayor has been actively involved in unblocking the delayed works.
