Several Spanish publications reported on Călin Georgescu being stopped in traffic and questioned in the case handled by DIICOT, presenting both the investigators’ allegations and the political trajectory of the former candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
Georgescu was detained after several hours of searches at his home in Mogoșoaia. The case concerns the formation of an organized criminal group and fraud allegations, with prosecutors estimating the damage at approximately €1.1 million.
La Razón reported on the politician’s detention, describing him as pro-Russian, and noted that prosecutors consider him the leader of a group made up of a Romanian and an Italian, who allegedly operated in Romania and the United Kingdom since 2021.
ABC described Georgescu as a former far-right presidential candidate and recalled the allegations previously brought against him, including incitement to actions against the constitutional order, falsifying information concerning campaign financing, and promoting fascist or racist ideas.
The EFE news agency focused on his unexpected rise in the first round of the November 2024 election and on his intensive TikTok campaign. The publication also noted that Georgescu is under judicial supervision, while his supporters consider the investigations a smear campaign.
