The Craiova Regional Directorate for Roads and Bridges (DRDP Craiova) announces that more than 80% of the infrastructure required to launch the TBM machine has been completed on Section 3, Cornetu–Tigveni, of the Sibiu–Pitești Motorway. Assembly of the machine’s components is scheduled to begin at the start of next month, according to information released on Saturday.
The works concern the launching platform and the infrastructure required to assemble the Poiana Tunnel boring machine, nicknamed the “mole.” The TBM components will be supplied by the manufacturer and assembled on site, in an essential stage before excavation can begin.
The Poiana Tunnel will be 1,780 metres long and will be the longest tunnel on this motorway section. It will be built using TBM technology, which enables mechanized excavation under controlled conditions and maintains a steady rate of advance.
The Cornetu–Tigveni section is part of the Sibiu–Pitești Motorway and is the first sector to be fully administered by DRDP Craiova. Preparatory works for assembling the machine are progressing according to the schedule announced by the authorities.
