Work on the Boița 1 Tunnel, located on the Boița-Cornetu section of the Sibiu-Pitești Motorway (A1), has reached a physical completion rate of 45.11% after contractors completed excavation for both bores. The announcement was made Sunday by Cristian Pistol, CNAIR’s director general.
The second bore, measuring 264 metres in length, was pierced through this week. The first bore, 247 metres long, was completed on 20 July 2026. The next stage involves installing waterproofing and the inner lining for the two bores.
Work is also continuing on the Balota and Robești tunnels. At Balota, which is 500 metres long, excavation and construction of the outer lining are underway, with physical progress standing at 13.69%. At Robești, which is 900 metres long, both bores have been pierced through, and work has reached 39.48% completion. Waterproofing and the inner lining are currently being carried out.
Across the entire construction site, 708 workers and 162 pieces of equipment are deployed, but overall progress is approximately 16%. Contractors can currently work on around 45% of the facilities included in the contract because the revised Environmental Agreement and building permits have not been issued for the entire construction site. CNAIR submitted the necessary documentation to the environmental authority on 12 August 2026.
The Boița-Cornetu section is 31.33 kilometres long and includes seven tunnels built using the NATM method. The contract, worth 4.25 billion lei excluding VAT, is financed through the Transport Programme.
