Works on the Tigveni–Curtea de Argeș section of the A1 Sibiu–Pitești Motorway have reached a physical completion rate of 99%, and traffic could open by the end of 2026. The 9.86-kilometre section is almost fully completed, but opening to traffic depends on safety tests for the Momaia Tunnel.
According to CNAIR Director General Cristian Pistol, the 1,350-metre tunnel is undergoing its final checks and adjustments. More than 2,500 monitoring points are being tested, including video cameras and sensors that can detect objects on the roadway and automatically close one lane or the entire tunnel.
The final test of the monitoring, prevention and intervention systems is scheduled for the end of September, together with ISU representatives. The maximum speed in the tunnel will be limited to 80 km/h.
On the rest of the section, the asphalt and road markings have been completed, while guardrails have been installed on the 12 bridges, overpasses and viaducts. The opening is planned ahead of the contractual deadline of February 2027. The contract is worth 1.678 billion lei, excluding VAT.
