CNAIR and the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations tested the safety systems in the Momaia Tunnel, on Section 4 Tigveni–Curtea de Argeș of the Sibiu–Pitești Motorway, as part of preparations to open the road to traffic this year.
The tests covered the high-capacity ventilation system, designed to remove smoke in the event of a fire, as well as the sensors, cameras and other equipment that must operate in an integrated manner during emergencies. According to CNAIR Director Cristian Pistol, the checks will underpin the intervention procedures and the decision on opening the tunnel.
The next stage will be a field exercise involving staff and emergency response forces, with a real-life incident simulated inside the tunnel. The tunnel, approximately 1.35 kilometres long, is Romania’s first motorway tunnel and is equipped with more than 2,500 sensors and smart cameras.
Work on the section’s 9.86 kilometres has been completed, while asphalt, road markings and safety barriers have been installed on the 12 bridges, overpasses and viaducts. The opening is scheduled ahead of the contractual deadline in February 2027. The sector will allow traffic on approximately 54 of the 122 kilometres of the A1 Sibiu–Pitești Motorway.
