On Wednesday, Romania set a new record in electricity production from photovoltaic sources, reaching an instantaneous capacity of 2,516 MW, which represents over 60% of national consumption. According to Transelectrica data, this level was reached at 1:12 PM, surpassing the previous record of 2,491 MW set on May 5. At the time of the record, the total energy production of the country was approximately 4,800 MW, under the conditions in which the nuclear reactors at Cernavodă were shut down. Romania has over 320,000 prosumers, with an installed capacity of 3,700 MW. However, the rapid increase in solar energy production highlights a major problem: the lack of storage capacities. A recent analysis shows that Romania exports cheap energy during the day but imports in the evening at much higher prices. In contrast, Bulgaria is investing in storage, already having a capacity of 2 GW in batteries, while Romania has only 0.6 GW. This situation underscores the need for investments in storage infrastructure to effectively harness the energy transition.
