Romania continues to be one of the countries with the most dangerous roads in the European Union, with a road mortality rate of 68 deaths per million inhabitants, well above the EU average of 43. However, preliminary data for 2025 shows a decrease of approximately 12% in the number of deaths compared to the previous year and nearly 30% compared to 2019.
The progress is significant, Romania being on track to achieve the European goal of reducing deaths by 50% by 2030. Most fatal accidents occur on rural roads, and young people and the elderly are the most vulnerable. The European Union aims to reach zero deaths in road accidents by 2050, and the European Commissioner for Transport emphasizes the importance of joint efforts in reducing the number of victims.
