Brașov police are investigating a scam in which employees of stores equipped with SelfPay and PayPoint terminals were allegedly persuaded to transfer money illegally, with estimated losses exceeding 200,000 lei. The suspects reportedly posed by phone as technicians from the operators and cited technical checks or software updates.

Following the calls, employees carried out certain operations on the terminals, and the amounts were transferred to digital wallets, payment accounts, or gambling platforms. The money was then allegedly introduced into the financial circuit through betting, in a manner that investigators say offered a high likelihood of recovering the amounts wagered. They were subsequently withdrawn into accounts controlled by the individuals involved.

Police established that the suspects also used accounts opened in other people’s names to conceal the origin of the money. This week, three people from Galați County were brought in for questioning: two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old. All were detained for 24 hours and taken to the Brașov Detention and Preventive Arrest Center.

Five other people are also being investigated in the case, having previously been placed under preventive measures. The investigation is being coordinated by the prosecutor handling the case from the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Brașov Tribunal for Minors and Family and continues to establish the full criminal activity, the amount of the losses, and all those involved.

Context: Police have recently also documented fraud schemes involving payments through SelfPay and illegal access to accounts

Last summer, police also investigated a fraud case on the coast, in which suspects published fake accommodation rental advertisements and induced victims to make payments through SelfPay stations, for deposits or the entire stay. After the payments were confirmed, communication was allegedly cut off, and the total loss was estimated at more than 33,000 lei.

At the same time, in Bucharest and Ilfov, investigators conducted searches in a case involving illegal access to computer systems and fraudulent financial operations, in which foreign tourists were allegedly recruited in the Old Town. The investigation targeted dozens of transactions (40 documented), and 35 payments worth approximately 92,000 lei were allegedly made from the account of a single man, in addition to other amounts lost by the other victims.
