Nicușor Dan, at the Summit of the Romanian Community in Chicago: Romania must acknowledge the unfulfilled promises and regain the trust of Romanians in the diaspora

President Nicușor Dan sent a message on Sunday to participants in the Romanian Community Summit, held in Chicago, United States, in which he stated that the relationship between Romania and the diaspora must be rebuilt through honesty and respect.

The message was presented during the event by Ana-Maria Geană, State Counselor for Romanians Everywhere. The head of state said that Romania must openly acknowledge the difficult experiences of those who left the country, including unfulfilled promises, injustices, and the feeling that their work and competence were not sufficiently appreciated.

Nicușor Dan emphasized that the Romanian state has an obligation to treat Romanians in the diaspora with respect in every interaction, from consular services and obtaining documents to investments or returning to the country. He pointed to efficient public services, clear rules, and timely responses as essential elements of a serious diaspora policy.

The president encouraged Romanians abroad to remain involved in Romania’s development and to demand competence and integrity from the authorities. He said that their experience can contribute to the country’s development projects.

At the same time, Nicușor Dan conveyed that Romanians considering returning must benefit from real conditions to take this step, while those settled in other countries must be able to maintain their connection and involvement in Romania’s affairs.
