Romania is preparing for the first heat wave of the year, with temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees Celsius, according to the director of the National Meteorological Administration (ANM), Elena Mateescu, while a "heat dome" has engulfed Western Europe.
Wednesday will be the hottest day of this episode, with values exceeding 30 degrees, especially in the west of the country and in the Capital.
The meteorologist emphasized that such episodes are becoming increasingly frequent in southeastern Europe, and summer is starting early.
At the same time, Europe is experiencing a historic weather episode, with temperatures 12-16 degrees above normal, caused by a heat dome that blocks atmospheric circulation.
Extreme heat will be followed by storms and a temporary drop in temperatures.
After the peak of heat, the maximums will drop to 24-25 degrees, but a new increase in temperatures is expected at the end of May.
Temperatures of 40 degrees in Europe
According to Adevărul, which cites Severe Weather, in the Iberian Peninsula, the highest values are expected in the second half of the week, when southern Spain and Portugal could frequently record 35-39 degrees Celsius, with isolated episodes reaching 40 degrees.
In France, temperatures will reach highs of 37-39 degrees in the south and southwest. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, temperatures are well above the normal for the period, with values locally reaching 30-35 degrees, while in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, a persistent heat regime remains, between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius.
