The Government decided on Friday to allocate 7,849,000 lei for continuing the renovation and modernization works on restroom facilities in 97 state pre-university education institutions. The funds come from the budget of the Ministry of Education and Research and will also be used to ensure the utilities necessary for their operation.
The money is intended for schools that received funding in 2025 but where the works had not been started or completed by the end of the year. The institutions concerned are located in the counties of Argeș, Bacău, Botoșani, Buzău, Caraș-Severin, Călărași, Constanța, Dolj, Gorj, Giurgiu, Ialomița, Iași, Mehedinți, Olt, Vaslui and Vrancea.
The funding targets in particular schools with restroom facilities that do not comply with hygiene standards. In some cases, the toilets are located outside the buildings and do not have running water or sewage systems.
The amounts will be transferred to local budgets through the school inspectorates. The local authorities will be responsible for the works and will cover any additional costs, including connection to water and sewage systems. In the end, the restroom facilities must have water, sewage, electricity and heating, conditions necessary for obtaining the sanitary authorization. Funds not spent by the end of 2026 will be returned to the state budget.
