On Friday, September 18, the Romanian Government approved amendments to the framework methodology for awarding scholarships for the 2026–2027 school year. Social scholarships will be paid throughout the entire year, including during school holidays, to support students in vulnerable socioeconomic situations and prevent school dropout.
The merit scholarship will amount to 450 lei per month and will be awarded to students in lower secondary, upper secondary, and vocational education, including dual education. Social and technological scholarships will amount to 300 lei per month. The technological scholarship is intended for students in vocational education, including dual education, and aims to encourage participation in these forms of education.
Unlike social scholarships, merit and technological scholarships are awarded during the school term and in certain periods dedicated to preparing for and taking national examinations. In the initial version submitted for public consultation, the Ministry of Education had proposed that social scholarships be awarded only during the school term.
The methodology also provides for a scholarship of 700 lei per month for minor mothers reintegrated into the education system after giving birth. Students in private and denominational education may receive social and technological scholarships under the conditions established by the regulatory act. These scholarships may be combined with other forms of support provided by authorities or economic operators.
