Mircea Geoană, the president of the Aspen Institute and former deputy secretary general of NATO, discussed the unprecedented transformations in global security, emphasizing that NATO is no longer static. During the conference presenting the Energy Security Barometer, he highlighted the negotiations between European allies and the US to ensure a security presence in Europe.
Geoană mentioned that the definition of peace is changing, considering the permanent asymmetric war with the Russian Federation, which includes cyber attacks and cognitive warfare. He emphasized the importance of a security culture and the psychological resilience of the population. He also stressed the need to adapt NATO's doctrine to integrate new dimensions of security, such as artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
"NATO is no longer static. Even at this moment, there is a negotiation that I welcome between European allies and the American ally in NATO, about what it means to continue a presence and security guarantee for Europe, which is indispensable, however we look at it. It is impossible, both financially, technologically, and politically, to do this alone. At this moment, there is a negotiation of the transatlantic contract, which also means what allows the US to maintain in Europe, which will not be small, but also what we have as European allies and everything that means non-US, including Canada here, and non-EU countries." said Mircea Geoană, the president of the Aspen Institute and former deputy secretary general of NATO, at the conference presenting the Energy Security Barometer.
