The management of the Buzău Genetic Resources Bank (BRGV) draws attention to the risks associated with the trade agreement between the European Union and the Mercosur bloc, which could lead to the disappearance of certain plant varieties from Romania. BRGV emphasizes that the country is not prepared for this agreement, having insufficient infrastructure for the control of genetically modified products and pathogens.

Imports from South America could increase the carbon footprint, in contradiction with EU policies aimed at reducing emissions. Additionally, BRGV mentions that Romania has lost over 2,600 vegetable varieties in recent decades and that opening the market could discourage local growers from using indigenous genetic resources. Despite the risks, the agreement could provide temporary solutions during agricultural crises, but it is essential for Romania to develop a coherent strategy to protect its agriculture and genetic heritage.
