Minister of Education and Research, Mihai Dimian, stated on Friday, September 4, that students’ participation in the “Te Deum” service organized at the beginning of the school year, in the Metropolitan Cathedral in Cluj-Napoca, is optional and must respect freedom of conscience.
The clarification comes after the Cluj County School Inspectorate sent educational institutions in the county a notice regarding the participation of some students in the service blessing the new school year. According to the minister, the information made public by the inspectorate indicates that students are not required to participate.
However, Mihai Dimian drew attention to the fact that the wording used in the notice sent to schools could create the impression that participation was mandatory. The minister emphasized that any such action may take place only with respect for its optional nature and freedom of conscience.
The official’s reaction comes amid discussions regarding students’ participation in religious events organized or promoted in connection with the beginning of the school year. He reiterated that attendance at the “Te Deum” service cannot be imposed on students.
