Education Minister Mihai Dimian has condemned the assault of a physical education and sports teacher at Secondary School No. 15 in Timișoara by members of a student’s family and called for the authority of teaching staff to be strengthened.
The minister welcomed the intervention of the judicial authorities in the case. The court ordered the pretrial detention for 30 days of a 39-year-old man and for 20 days of a 16-year-old minor, who are being investigated in connection with the assault of the teacher.
Mihai Dimian announced that the teacher will receive support from the Ministry of Education and Research, the County School Inspectorate and the school’s management. He also stressed the need to provide psychological support to people affected by the incident.
The minister proposed three additional measures to protect teachers: special criminal protection for staff who are threatened or assaulted, funded legal assistance and prompt psychological support, as well as restricting access to the school for people considered a risk.
Dimian said that parents have the right to report teachers’ conduct, but any allegation must be objectively investigated, and grievances do not justify threats or violence. The minister maintains that teachers must be able to enforce compliance with the rules and perform their duties with the support of the school and the state.
