The Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) reacted to the European Commission's report on the rule of law in Romania for 2026, stating that it does not indicate regressions in justice, but formulates important recommendations. CSM emphasizes that the report contradicts the negative narratives in public discourse and that the justice laws adopted in 2022 have improved the legislative framework. However, CSM criticizes the fact that the reform of the justice laws was initiated without the involvement of all relevant actors, which led to dysfunctions. CSM acknowledges the right of civil society and the press to signal problems, but warns against generalizations. Additionally, CSM contests some information in the report, such as delays in communicating disciplinary decisions. The Council commits to analyzing the recommendations of the European Commission and calls for a constructive public debate, without stigmatizations.
