The Supreme Council of National Defense (CSAT) will meet on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Palace to discuss the temporary deployment of military capabilities on the territory of Romania and to assess the impact of events in the Middle East on the oil market in the country.
The United States has requested the deployment of troops and fighter jets at Mihail Kogălniceanu base, considered strategic for NATO. The meeting is scheduled for 09:30, and the approved decisions will be sent to Parliament for adoption.
Currently, approximately 1,000 American soldiers are in Romania, and the base in Constanța could become a launch point for fighter jets in the context of the conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The deployment of foreign troops requires the approval of Parliament.
If the deployment receives approval, Romania would benefit on several levels (military, technological, and political), but would risk being perceived as a new high-level hotspot and would also risk economic consequences.
