The Supreme Council for the Defense of the Country convened at 18:00, on the second day of activity of the Government led by Luca Niculescu, for its first meeting in the new composition. The main topic is the drone incidents in the Black Sea and the measures necessary to protect Romania’s territorial waters and critical maritime infrastructure.
According to the official statement, the CSAT members will analyze the security implications of the incidents and assess measures to strengthen the authorities’ response capacity. Other current national security issues are also on the meeting’s agenda.
“During the meeting, the security implications generated by the incidents in the Black Sea will be analyzed, and measures to strengthen the response capacity to protect Romania’s territorial waters and critical maritime infrastructure will be assessed. Other current issues in the field of national security will also be analyzed during the Council meeting,” the official statement reads.
The meeting takes place after a series of incidents in which commercial vessels in the Black Sea were hit or sunk by drones. On October 15, Romanian President Nicușor Dan, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, discussed the security of the region. The President of Romania then emphasized the need for equipment adapted to this new type of challenge.
The new composition of the CSAT includes the President of Romania, the Prime Minister, the Ministers of Defense, Internal Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Justice, Economy and Finance, the directors of the Romanian Intelligence Service and the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Chief of the Defense Staff, the presidential adviser for national security, and the CSAT secretary. Luca Niculescu, Marian Neacșu, Dan Neculăescu, and Daniel Zamfir are participating in the Council’s meetings for the first time.
