The CSAT meeting chaired by Nicușor Dan has ended / What measures were analyzed

The Supreme Council for National Defense, led by President Nicușor Dan, analyzed on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Cotroceni Palace, the escalation of maritime incidents in the Black Sea. The discussions focused on violations of national airspace and drone attacks on commercial vessels located in Romania’s territorial waters or nearby.

The Presidential Administration stated that these developments are considered direct consequences of the aggression of the Russian Federation beyond Ukraine’s borders and that threats to navigation and critical infrastructure have intensified. Romania is pursuing the protection of ports, commercial vessels, and energy facilities in the Exclusive Economic Zone.

The CSAT members assessed the measures adopted so far and established priorities for developing maritime surveillance, combating sea mines, and responding to drones that unlawfully enter the airspace or maritime space. The operational response will be strengthened through interinstitutional exercises and the updating of intervention plans.

Another topic was strengthening defense on NATO’s Eastern Flank and coordination with the littoral allies. Romania supports the operationalization of the Black Sea Security Hub and expanding the role of the MCM Black Sea group to protect critical infrastructure. At the end, Nicușor Dan also called for measures to prevent violence in schools.
