Cristela Georgescu, summoned for questioning by DIICOT prosecutors (sources)

Cristela Georgescu, the wife of Călin Georgescu, is scheduled to be questioned on Tuesday by DIICOT prosecutors as a witness in the case in which the former presidential candidate was detained for 24 hours. The questioning takes place in the context of the investigation into the formation of an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences.

According to judicial sources, investigators want to find out whether Cristela Georgescu was aware of the businesses under investigation and of the mechanism by which a businessman from Buzău was allegedly persuaded to pay more than 1.1 million euros in exchange for the promise of access to financing worth millions of euros.

Călin Georgescu was taken into custody on Monday, September 21, by DIICOT prosecutors. After searches at his home in Mogoșoaia and approximately nine hours of checks, he was taken to the institution’s headquarters and detained. According to sources, he invoked his right to remain silent.

DIICOT stated that the investigation has a cross-border nature and that evidence was obtained from five countries: Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Italy, Austria, and Romania. Three other cases were also joined to the file. Prosecutors will order the legal measures depending on the outcome of the investigation.
