Cristela Georgescu, the wife of former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu, accused the Romanian authorities of restricting freedoms and persecuting his supporters in an interview given on Friday to American journalist Alex Jones and broadcast live on the X network. She compared the current situation to the communist regime and claimed, without presenting evidence during the interview, that “the dictatorship in Romania today is worse than the dictatorship before 1989.”
Cristela Georgescu stated that her husband’s supporters, the independent press, and citizens who protested had allegedly been fined, intimidated, or arrested. She also claimed that democracy “died in Romania” and that state institutions had become a source of fear for the population.
The statements were made in the context of the DIICOT case in which Călin Georgescu is being investigated for forming an organized criminal group and fraud with particularly serious consequences. On September 29, the Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered his pretrial detention for 30 days. Georgescu rejects the accusations, while his family maintains that the investigations are politically motivated.
Călin Georgescu won the first round of the presidential election on November 24, 2024. On December 6, the Constitutional Court annulled the electoral process after the declassification of documents presented to the Supreme Council of National Defence concerning irregularities and alleged interference in the campaign.
