Prior to the video message in November, Călin Georgescu had been in pre-trial detention since September 29, after the Bucharest Court of Appeal ordered the measure for 30 days in the case in which he is accused, alongside businessman Ionel Rusen, of fraud involving damages of approximately 1.1 million euros. In the investigation, prosecutors also spoke of the establishment of an organized criminal group and claimed that the victim had been persuaded to transfer the money under the pretext of obtaining bank financing.
Meanwhile, DIICOT conducted digital searches at the Georgescu family’s home, beginning on October 6, when Cristela Georgescu arrived at the institution’s headquarters as a witness. She claimed that personal data and images from the family environment had been processed, while, according to information in the case file, the investigation concerned the seized devices and possible deleted messages.
At the same time, precautionary measures were also ordered: DIICOT announced the freezing of several of Călin Georgescu’s bank accounts, after assets such as the villa in Mogoșoaia had previously also been placed under seizure. During the same period, supporters appeared in front of the Central Detention Center, staying there with tents and blankets.
