Călin Georgescu will appear before the judges of the Bucharest Tribunal again on Thursday, who will examine his request to replace preventive detention with a more lenient measure, such as house arrest or judicial supervision.
The former presidential candidate is serving his second period of preventive detention, for 30 days, after the Bucharest Court of Appeal upheld the DIICOT prosecutors’ challenge and ordered the extension of the most restrictive measure. Georgescu is being investigated in this case for fraud with particularly serious consequences and the establishment of an organized criminal group as a continuing offense.
The request being examined on Thursday is not the first of its kind. In response to the previous request, the Bucharest Tribunal had decided to place Georgescu under house arrest, but the ruling was overturned by the Bucharest Court of Appeal following the prosecutors’ challenge.
The Bucharest Tribunal’s decision will not be final. Any potential challenge will also be settled by the Bucharest Court of Appeal. In total, Călin Georgescu is involved in five criminal cases, according to the information presented in this case.
