Călin Georgescu appears before the Bucharest Court of Appeal again, after the two judges who examined DIICOT’s appeal failed to reach a decision. The case will be reheard by a panel of disagreement, consisting of a third magistrate, in a hearing scheduled for Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
The procedure is provided for by the Code of Criminal Procedure when the members of a panel do not reach the required unanimity or majority. The third judge will examine the case in full and is not required to choose between the opinions initially expressed.
DIICOT is challenging the decision of the Bucharest Tribunal of September 22, by which the proposal for pretrial detention was rejected, while Călin Georgescu and businessman Ionel Rusen were placed under judicial supervision for 60 days, until November 20, 2026. Prosecutors are requesting that the measure be replaced with 30 days of pretrial detention.
The investigation concerns alleged damages of approximately 1.1 million euros, in a case initiated by a complaint filed by a businessman from Buzău. Prosecutors placed a lien on Georgescu’s villa in Mogoșoaia. He is also on trial in a case concerning actions against the constitutional order, in which the next hearing is scheduled for October 12.
