Traian Băsescu, former president of Romania, stated on Tuesday evening at Digi24 that Peter Magyar, the new prime minister of Hungary, would not be successful in the Romanian political context. Băsescu described Magyar as "an almost faithful copy" of Viktor Orban, emphasizing that he is a nationalist who opposes supporting Ukraine and its integration into the European Union. The former head of state added that Magyar is a "sovereigntist at heart" and would not bring significant changes in Hungary, apart from implementing a financial program to access European funds. Băsescu also commented on the voting results in Hungary, mentioning that the Trump-Putin tandem was defeated by the Hungarian people, highlighting the power of democracy against authoritarianism.
"It is not possible, this Hungarian is an almost faithful copy of Orbán, only he is a little younger, but he is a nationalist, he is against supporting Ukraine, he is against Ukraine's entry into the European Union, and I would be surprised if he is not against the entry of the Republic of Moldova. He is a sovereigntist at heart, he does not believe that anything will change. One thing will change, he will execute the entire 27-point program that will allow him to collect the 17 billion euros he needs and is entitled to from the European Union," said former president Traian Băsescu at Digi24.
