The Minister of the Environment, Diana Buzoianu, announced the intention to protect Băneasa Forest, emphasizing its importance for the quality of life of the residents of Bucharest. During a press conference, Buzoianu mentioned that Băneasa Forest is part of a larger project to protect the forests around cities in Romania.
Recently, the Bucharest Natural Park Association submitted a study to the Romanian Academy to obtain protected area status, which will contribute to the conservation of biodiversity and the forest ecosystem. Băneasa Forest, covering an area of 1221.5 hectares, is a habitat for hundreds of species of animals and plants, of which 46 are protected. Construction activities and the opening of forest roads have raised concerns among environmental activists, who are calling for urgent measures to prevent the degradation of this essential green area. Băneasa Forest is considered an oasis of nature in Bucharest, playing a crucial role in combating pollution and improving air quality.
