President Nicușor Dan said on Wednesday at the 2026 Climate Change Summit in Bucharest that protecting natural heritage must be a priority reflected in public policies. His message was read by Ștefania Georgiana Simion, the presidential adviser for environmental issues.
The head of state stressed that climate policies must take into account both the need for secure energy, investment and adapted infrastructure, as well as the value of forests, waters and natural habitats. He supported the Bucharest-Ilfov Green Belt project, saying it could contribute to cleaner air, recreational spaces and better adaptation to high temperatures.
Nicușor Dan also spoke about protecting Roșia Montană, noting that the area’s international recognition must be accompanied by landscape conservation, the promotion of its cultural heritage and the creation of opportunities for local residents. He also called for support for centers that rehabilitate wildlife and mentioned the need to conserve Lake Techirghiol.
The president advocated predictable rules, rigorous assessments, resources for conservation and community involvement in decisions concerning protected natural areas. Representatives of the IPCC, OECD, EBRD and FEBA are attending the summit, where they are discussing the infrastructure of the future, economic competitiveness and climate resilience.
