Nicușor Dan, message from the UNESCO Gala: “New technologies can contribute to researching, protecting, and transmitting heritage to new generations”

President Nicusor Dan stressed, in a speech dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Romania becoming a UNESCO member state, that protecting cultural heritage and developing education are essential responsibilities in a world marked by technological and social change.

The head of state explained that UNESCO’s role is taking on new dimensions in the era of artificial intelligence. According to him, technology must remain at the service of people, while education must be protected as a right and a common good of humanity, capable of developing critical thinking, autonomy and responsibility.

Nicusor Dan said that new technologies can support the research, protection and transmission of heritage to future generations, while respecting its authenticity and significance.

The president also highlighted the role of local communities and young people in preserving heritage. He argued that it cannot be protected by institutions alone, but must be known, respected and embraced by communities.

In this context, the 70 years of cooperation between Romania and UNESCO represent not only a balance sheet, but also the beginning of a new stage, involving investment in education, science and knowledge, the protection of heritage in the face of climate change, and the defense of cultural diversity and freedom of expression.
