President Nicușor Dan called on academia to play a more prominent role in the public debate and contribute to turning Romania into a “knowledge society.” The message was delivered at the ceremony marking the opening of the academic year, hosted by the Faculty of History of the University of Bucharest.
The head of state congratulated the University of Bucharest on its role in Romanian higher education and its ability to adapt to the demands of society and the labor market. He argued that public decisions should be based on recognized scientific truths.
Nicușor Dan warned that the absence of researchers and professors from spaces where public opinion is shaped could create “two parallel realities.” He pointed to social media, including TikTok, where approximately nine million Romanians are present, as an example of a space in which academia needs to be more active.
The president urged students to make the most of their years of study, which he described as an essential period for personal development and for discovering the pleasure of learning.
