Approximately 30 dogs died in a fire that broke out on Friday night into Saturday at an animal shelter in Bordea village, Grajduri commune, Iași County. The fire was reported at around 1:45 a.m., and firefighters intervened to extinguish the blaze and rescue the animals housed at the shelter.
Two firefighting vehicles and an ambulance were initially dispatched to the scene, but the response was reinforced with two additional firefighting vehicles because of the scale of the fire and the risk of it spreading. Crews from the Iași Firefighting Unit 2 managed to contain the flames and protect nearby buildings and animals.
According to the Iași County Emergency Situations Inspectorate, the shelter housed approximately 600 dogs, while the fire destroyed property across an area of about 300 square meters. Following checks carried out after the fire was extinguished, firefighters determined that the probable cause was heat generated by a chimney that was not properly protected from nearby combustible materials.
