The book market in Romania is going through a difficult period, characterized by increased taxation and pressure from production costs. Florentina Ion, the founder of Didactica Publishing House (DPH), believes that these challenges represent a test of entrepreneurial maturity. The increase in VAT on books from 5% to 11% has amplified the difficulties, Romania having one of the highest VAT rates in Europe. In this context, DPH has adopted a production adjustment strategy, reducing print runs by 15%-20% and relying on quick reprints to avoid locking up capital in stock.

Although production costs have risen, DPH has managed to end the year 2025 with a 3% increase in turnover, and the number of new titles has increased by 20%. The publishing house has invested in diversifying sales channels, with 80% of its business generated from direct sales to parents and bookstores. Additionally, DPH has initiated educational projects and developed partnerships with European printing houses to reduce costs.

Florentina Ion has also tested the digital direction but decided to focus on integrating reading with creative play, considering a contract with Lego that could generate significant growth. The project for an atypical bookstore has been strategically postponed, and the publishing house continues to invest in the community through the 'Reading Corner' program. The story of DPH is one of adaptation and innovation in education, demonstrating that, despite the challenges, education remains a solid long-term investment.
