The Orchestra of the Bucharest National Opera, conducted by Daniel Jinga, performed an Opera Gala on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the oldest opera house in the world still in operation. The event was organized at the invitation of the Embassy of Romania in Italy, in collaboration with the Honorary Consulate of Romania in Naples and the Neapolitan theater, as part of the Romania–Italy Cultural Year 2026 and ahead of Romania’s National Day.

The concert opened with the national anthems of Romania and Italy and included Romanian works, such as George Enescu’s Rhapsody No. 1, as well as arias and ensembles from operas by Rossini, Puccini, Cilea, Leoncavallo and Bellini. The soloists were mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose, soprano Paula Iancic and tenor Teodor Ilincăi.

The program also featured Romanian operetta works, including “Sărmane lăutar” by Gherase Dendrino and “Muzica” by George Grigoriu. For the ONB Orchestra and Daniel Jinga, the Naples appearance continues the international journey that began at Teatro La Fenice in Venice and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. In 2025, artists from the institution performed a recital at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, while in July 2026 the orchestra took part in the Ravello Festival.

Context: A Romanian-Italian cultural project is preparing Romania’s visibility in Italy and San Marino in 2026

Before the gala in Naples, a relevant initiative for the “Romania–Italy Cultural Year 2026” was the “Elena Teodorini Centenary 1926–2026,” launched at Casa Giuseppe Verdi – Casa dei Musicisti in Milan. The project marks 100 years since the death of soprano Elena Teodorini and takes place from 25 September to 11 October 2026, bringing together institutions and artists from Romania, Italy, the Republic of San Marino, and the Republic of Moldova, with events that also include a program at Teatro Titano (7–11 October), such as a masterclass, exhibitions, conferences, and the presentation of a volume dedicated to the artist. The initiative is organized by the Romanian-Sammarinese Cultural Association “Dacia Senza Frontiere,” in collaboration with the Italian-Romanian Cultural Center in Milan, and is funded by the Department for Romanians Abroad.
