Bucharest City Hall approved the rehabilitation and strengthening project for the Opera Bridge, following a vote by the general councillors, at the initiative of General Mayor Ciprian Ciucu. The works are necessary because the passage over the Dâmbovița River is in an unsatisfactory technical condition, and the intervention will last 24 months.
The project provides for four months for the preparation of the technical design and another 20 months for carrying out the works. The objective is to restore the deteriorated elements, strengthen the structure, and improve safety for road and pedestrian traffic.
According to Bucharest City Hall, the roadway and sidewalks have cracks and uneven surfaces, the paving stones in the parking area are damaged, the signposts are deformed, the support beams have cracks, and the railing no longer provides sufficient safety. Water infiltration is affecting the structure, and the bridge does not have anti-seismic devices.
The bridge plays a strategic role in traffic in Bucharest, providing a connection between the city center and the western neighborhoods, as well as access to the A1 Motorway.
The central section was built in 1986, as part of the development of the Dâmbovița River, and the bridge was extended in 1993. At present, the total width of the structure reaches 124.79 meters.
