Repair work on Basarab Overpass in Bucharest is continuing after the infrastructure deteriorated during the 15 years since it was opened to traffic, a period in which the project did not receive final acceptance. Bucharest City Hall says the overpass is expected to be completed and receive final acceptance at the beginning of next year.

So far, 52,000 square metres of concrete surfaces have been cleaned, repaired and protected with special coatings—equivalent to nearly three times the footprint of the Palace of Parliament. In addition, 5,577 metres of cracks have been filled, while 680 square metres of deteriorated walls have been stripped and rebuilt.

The work has included resurfacing 37,000 square metres, replacing 135 metres of expansion joints, and fully rehabilitating two kilometres of pavements and curbs. A total of 192 drainage inlets have been repaired, and a new rainwater drainage system has been installed over a length of 3,863 metres, of which 1,288 metres remain to be completed.

The work also covers the tram track, guardrails and metal protective elements. The city government says the overpass will be “as good as new” at the beginning of next year, when final acceptance is scheduled.
