Serena Williams (44 years old) returned on Tuesday (June 30) to the competitive circuit after a four-year absence, but her adventure at Wimbledon ended in the first round.
The American, who entered the main draw with a wildcard, was defeated by the Australian Maya Joint (20 years old), with a score of 3-6, 7-6(6), 3-6, on the Centre Court at the All England Club. The 20-year-old Australian was not born when Serena Williams won the first of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles, but she handled the pressure of a match played on Centre Court well.
Joint arrived at Wimbledon after a difficult period, with only one match won in the last 12 tournaments. In the second round, Maya Joint will face Alexandra Eala, a player from the Philippines and the 29th seed.
