Sorana Cîrstea was eliminated from the US Open in the round of 16 after being defeated by American Jessica Pegula, 6-3, 6-4. The match in New York, played in the latter part of the 2026 season, lasted one hour and 25 minutes and marked the Romanian's final appearance at a Grand Slam tournament.

Pegula, the world No. 3 and the tournament's third seed, controlled the first set and won it 6-3. In the second set, the American closed out the match 6-4 to claim her fourth victory in five meetings with Cîrstea.

At the end, Jessica Pegula said she had great respect for her opponent and described the match as “a battle.” Cîrstea won the first meeting between the two players, in 2011, in Midland, but Pegula subsequently prevailed in Midland in 2015, in Madrid in 2021, and in Cincinnati in 2026.

Sorana Cîrstea, the No. 16 seed in New York, will collect $480,000 for her run at the US Open. The Romanian player had previously announced that she would retire at the end of 2026, a decision reaffirmed this season. 160 chars. approximately? No need. actually remove this.
