Venus and Serena Williams were eliminated from the US Open on Friday evening after losing to the Hao-Ching Chan/Maya Joint pair, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (10-7). The match took place in New York and marked the American sisters’ first appearance at the Grand Slam tournament since the 2022 edition.
After losing the first set, Serena and Venus came back in the second set and leveled the score. In the deciding set, the sisters were trailing 1-4, but recovered and sent the match into a tie-break.
Venus and Serena made an excellent start to the super tie-break, taking a 5-0 lead. Chan and Joint came back, however, and won seven of the last important points, prevailing 10-7.
The sisters’ return to doubles had been postponed after Serena Williams suffered a knee injury. The two won the US Open together in 1999 and 2009, and in their 10 appearances they have a record of 27 wins and eight losses.
Serena Williams, who returned to the tour at the age of 44, thus suffered her second defeat this summer to Australian Maya Joint, following the match she lost at Wimbledon. Venus Williams continues to play at the age of 46.
