Ionuț Stroe, a deputy and representative of several sports clubs in Romania, has sent a petition to President Nicușor Dan, requesting the halt of the 'Novak Law', which requires teams to use a minimum of 40% Romanian athletes in domestic competitions. Stroe argues that the law is discriminatory, affecting sports competition and the right to work of foreign athletes. He emphasizes that the law is unconstitutional, generating legal insecurity and distorting sports values through citizenship criteria. Additionally, Stroe warns that Romania risks an infringement procedure from the European Union, considering that restrictions based on citizenship are prohibited. The law was adopted by the Chamber of Deputies and will come into effect in the 2026/2027 season, and clubs that do not comply with the 40% quota will be penalized with significant fines.
