Indonesia has declared that it will maintain an active role in global sports, despite the recent sanctions imposed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). These sanctions were triggered by the country's decision not to allow Israeli gymnasts to participate in the World Gymnastics Championships.
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, acknowledged that he expected "consequences" from this choice, but emphasized Indonesia's commitment to organizing international sporting events, respecting principles of security and public order.
The IOC has suspended dialogue with Indonesia and has urged sports federations not to hold competitions in this country. Indonesia, with a population of 286 million, aspires to host the Olympic Games in 2036, but has no diplomatic relations with Israel and supports the Palestinian cause.
