The contract to demolish the old “Corvinul 1921” stadium in Hunedoara was signed on Monday at the arena, which is to be replaced by a modern stadium built to the latest standards. The move marks the beginning of a major transformation for the 66-year-old sports facility.
The work will be carried out by BS Recycling of Cluj-Napoca, a company that also took part in the demolition of Steaua Stadium in Bucharest. The contract is worth 1.5 million lei, excluding VAT, and the completion deadline is six months. However, the authorities hope the demolition will be completed sooner so that work on the new arena can begin at the start of next year.
Hunedoara Mayor Dan Bobouțanu said the stadium had been supporters’ “home of dreams” for more than six decades, but is now outdated in every respect. To preserve its memory, the administration intends to create a scale model to be displayed at the entrance to the new arena.
The demolition is being financed from the local budget. The new stadium will be built through the National Investment Company as part of a project estimated at 54 million euros, including VAT. The Municipality of Hunedoara will contribute 25% of the construction and installation works, namely 10.3 million euros, to be paid in several installments.
