Novak Djokovic was eliminated again in the opening round of the US Open 2026, being defeated by the Argentine Mariano Navone at the end of a dramatic confrontation lasting over 4 and a half hours, ending with a score of 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. This defeat ends an astonishing streak of 78 consecutive victories achieved by the Serbian in the first round of Grand Slam tournaments.
Already faced with medical issues in Cincinnati, where he vomited on the court in the second round, the most decorated player in history reported a precarious physical condition since the first set, asking for a pill on the court. The Serbian vomited again on the court halfway through the third set.
It is only the third time that Novak Djokovic exits in the 1st round of a Grand Slam tournament. The previous two eliminations occurred at the Australian Open 2025 and the Australian Open 2026.
Mariano Navone achieves the victory of his career and advances to the second round.
There he will face the winner of the match between Matteo Berrettini (semifinalist US Open 2019) and Stan Wawrinka (the 2016 champion).
