Carlos Alcaraz made a winning start at the Paris Masters 1000 on Wednesday, defeating American Alex Michelsen (ranked 35th) 6-7 (4/7), 3-6 in the second round. For a place in the quarterfinals, the Spaniard will face Italy's Matteo Berrettini.
One of the day's biggest surprises was the elimination of Serbian Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion in Paris, by Australia's Rinky Hijikata, ranked 83rd in the world. He won 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Djokovic needed at least a semifinal appearance in Paris to remain in contention for Turin. This is the second time the Serb has failed to qualify since his first appearance in 2007.
Nor did German Alexander Zverev, who recently became world number one, manage to get past his first match in Paris. Italian Lorenzo Musetti defeated him 7-6 (5), 6-2.
Russia's Daniil Medvedev also exited the competition after being defeated by Peru's Ignacio Buse 6-4, 6-4.
