The PSD MEP, Vasile Dencu, stated that the situation of the CSA Steaua team is absurd, emphasizing that most teams in the Superliga are funded from public funds. Dencu mentioned that the initiative to allow Steaua to play in the first league was blocked by the influence of George Becali, who had an important role in Romanian politics, especially in the context of the electoral campaign for the presidential elections in 2024. The former Minister of Defense noted that many employees of the Ministry of National Defense do not wish for the team to be promoted to Liga I, but he did not want to elaborate on this subject. Dencu proposed a mixed funding solution, but it was not well received in the ministry. Currently, CSA Steaua, which plays in Liga II, does not have the right to be promoted to the Superliga României due to legislation that prohibits departmental clubs from participating in the first league.
