Defence Minister Radu Miruță announced that he had transferred oversight of Steaua football club’s activities to the ministry’s secretary general, amid efforts to partner the football team with a private investor. The decision aims to identify a solution that would allow the club to earn promotion to the SuperLiga.
According to the minister, discussions with an investor important enough to meet the club’s financial needs have begun to take shape. One of the members of Romanian football’s “Golden Generation” is also involved in this effort.
Miruță said that amending the law governing the Ministry of Defence is necessary to establish a new commercial company, an option requested during talks with potential investors. This step could not be completed during the interim government’s term.
Efforts to attract private funding were announced in the spring of this year. On 7 May, the minister said he had received 14 partnership proposals for CSA Steaua’s football section. The options included a joint venture, the establishment of a commercial company or a non-profit partnership.
CSA Steaua competes in the second tier, but is not entitled to promotion in its current legal form, as it is a public-law club subordinate to the Ministry of Defence. Romanian football regulations impose requirements concerning organisation and private participation at first-division level.
