Romania’s interim Defence Minister, Radu Miruță, is calling on Romania to seek European funding for the modernization of railways, bridges and roads needed for military mobility. He argues that the national infrastructure must be adapted for transporting military equipment and for military strategic situations.
Miruță pointed out that the Romanian Army’s modernization and procurement program will not be sufficient if civilian infrastructure cannot support the transport of heavy equipment. The problems mentioned include bridges that cannot support the weight of a military trailer, a lack of platforms for loading equipment onto trains, and roads that do not meet the necessary requirements.
The interim minister says that, at the European level, an analysis has begun of the link between infrastructure and military mobility. In this context, Romania should get involved from the outset and bring its own well-argued projects prepared for funding, rather than becoming merely the beneficiary of initiatives designed by other states.
Radu Miruță says Romania can serve as an example in this discussion and insists that projects must be prepared before European funds become available. In his view, infrastructure adapted for military transport is essential for the effectiveness of defence and for rapid mobility in crisis situations.
