Radu Miruță announced 30 unauthorized incursions into Romanian airspace in 2026 and 81 attacks at the border

Radu Miruță, the proposed minister of Defense, said Monday during his hearing before the joint parliamentary defense committees that unauthorized incursions into Romanian airspace had intensified in 2026 amid the war in Ukraine.

According to the data he presented, 49 unauthorized incursions into Romania’s airspace have been recorded since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Of these, 30 occurred in the first eight months of 2026. Miruță stressed that, in approximately four and a half years since the start of the war, the number of incidents recorded in 2026 represents a significant increase.

During the same period, 148 attacks along Romania’s border were reported, including 81 in 2026. The proposed minister said that four drones had been shot down: three by Romanian Army personnel and one by Spanish pilots deployed on an enhanced air-policing mission in Romania.

Miruță also said that information on drone incidents is updated on the website of the Ministry of National Defense. On the same day, he received a negative opinion from the parliamentary defense committees.
