Romania has recently completed the acquisition of the Giurgiulești Port in the Republic of Moldova, according to the announcement by MEP Nicu Ștefănuță. This transaction is considered a strategic investment, essential for the economic development of Moldova and the improvement of living standards. In 2023, Romania announced its intention to purchase the port, and in 2024 a governmental team was formed for negotiations, with the offer made through the National Company Maritime Ports Administration S.A. Constanța. Romania will invest over 24 million euros in modernizing the port infrastructure, considering its importance for connecting Moldova to European trade corridors. Although Moldovan officials have not confirmed the transaction, the Romanian Minister of Transport stated that the offer has been accepted and is in the final phase, emphasizing the need to extend the port's operating duration beyond 2030 to ensure the investment's profitability.
