Romania has played a crucial role in integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European energy market, helping it to transition from total dependence on the Russian Federation to exclusive supply from European sources. The Romanian Ambassador to Chișinău, Cristian-Leon Țurcanu, emphasized the immense benefits of diversifying supply sources, which allows Moldova to choose its gas and electricity suppliers. Transgaz has invested nearly 500 million euros to operate the National Gas Transport System in Moldova, connecting it to the Romanian network. Interconnection projects, such as the Iași–Ungheni–Chișinău Gas Pipeline, are essential for reducing dependence on Russian sources. Additionally, Romania has facilitated Moldova's connection to the European electricity system, allowing it to source from the free market. In the context of the energy crisis in Transnistria, Romania's support becomes vital for ensuring the continuity of energy supplies. The upcoming electricity interconnection projects are essential for strengthening energy relations between the two states.
